What are testing strips?Fentanyl testing strips are meant to test a substance prior to use for the presence of fentanyl. Because fentanyl has caused overdose rates to grow in recent years, testing strips are an important tool to reduce the risk of overdose.
Testing strips only work when the powder substance is mixed with water — thus, losing a bit of the substance in order to test for fentanyl is necessary. See the video below from the Cook County Department of Public Health for more information and a step-by-step.
Important note — with most testing strips:
one line = positive: your supply contains fentanyl two lines = negative: your supply does not contain fentanyl. |

As of right now, fentanyl testing strip distribution sites are limited to northern suburbs of Chicago — expansion into the western suburbs has been slow.
Change coming:On April 8th, 2022, Illinois' state legislature unanimously passed HB 4556, which will allow pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics to dispense fentanyl testing strips statewide. This legislative win will greatly expand accessibility to testing strips in areas outside of Chicago.
